1. Festive Bedding, Pillows, and Blankets
A good place to start is by changing out your kids’ regular bedding for Christmas-themed sheets, comforters, and pillowcases.
I love looking for designs that scream Christmas whether that’s Santa, reindeer, snowflakes, or Christmas trees.
Or keep the bedding the same simply add some decorative pillows on top of the bed.
The easy addition of a fun throw pillow can instantly elevate the room’s holiday spirit, without the expense of changing out the entire bedding.
I also like to add a throw blanket to the end of the bed.
It doesn’t need to scream holiday.
Adding a warm throw to the end of the bed adds an extra layer of comfort, creating a cozy and festive atmosphere that’s perfect for Christmastime.
2. Seasonal Holiday Accents
Decor pieces placed on nightstands and dressers are a wonderful way to add Christmas cheer to a room.
Think of incorporating tress, snowmen, or festive figurines.
I like to choose items that can easily grow with them or be used in different areas of the home in later years.
This not only ensures that the decor is timeless and versatile but also makes it a cherished part of your holiday tradition.
These thoughtfully chosen decorations could even be passed down from one generation to the next.
Or at least one can hope, right?!
3. Artwork
Replace regular wall art with festive holiday-themed posters or prints.
You can look for designs featuring Christmas characters, winter scenes, or fun quotes about the season.
You can easily swap these out each year, making it a fun tradition to look forward to.
For an interactive twist, let your kids create their own artwork to display during the holidays.
Artwork can even be a wreath that’s hung in their room or above their bed.
4. Advent Calendar
Incorporate their own advent calendar as part of their bedroom decor.
Choose one that can be reused year after year.
You can fill it with small treats leading up to Christmas, you can fill it with scripture readings, you can fill it with acts of kindness for the day, or even seasonal activities that you plan to do as a family.
But certainly don’t stress yourself out over coming up with 24 different things.
Just the daily countdown to the holiday adds the element of excitement to their space.
5. Special Books
Adding seasonal books to kid’s bedrooms is a delightful way to create a festive atmosphere as well as help foster a love of reading.
Whether you establish a cozy reading nook with plush pillows and a warm blanket, or simply place a few cherished books on the nightstand, the anticipation of revisiting these stories each year adds to the excitement of the season.
It’s amazing how these books become a treasured part of your yearly traditions.
Not to mention bedtime feels extra special as you count down the days to Christmas.
6. Add Garland
Infuse additional cheer into their rooms with festive garland.
Whether you opt for traditional faux green garland, a colorful felt garland, or a whimsical ornament garland, the display possibilities are endless in a bedroom.
You can swag the garland over artwork to create a playful focal point, drape it over the headboard of the bed, or cascade it across a dresser for festive flair.
Garland is one of my favorite ways to add Christmas decor to kids’ rooms because of how many ways you can use it.
In my daughter’s playroom I have a soft yarn garland draped over her tent.
You can even go crazy and hang it from the ceiling.
With the vast variety of garland options available, don’t be afraid to have fun and get creative!
7. Hang a Stocking
A stocking doesn’t have to be limited to the fireplace.
Hanging a stocking in your child’s room is yet another way to incorporate a traditional Christmas element into their space.
Consider hanging a stocking on a dresser knob, at the end of the bed, or even on the handle of their closet for a whimsical touch.
I’ll let you decide whether or not you want to tuck a few surprises inside on Christmas morning. 😉
8. Picture Frames
Picture frames are a wonderful way to decorate kids’ rooms for Christmas as a way to display cherished memories of past holidays.
Display photos from Christmases past, snapshots of your child with Santa Claus, or festive family portraits.
These framed moments add both a personal and sentimental touch to their space.
Swapping out photos annually can even become a new family tradition.
You’ve got to love ways to make the holiday season even more memorable and precious holiday photos do just that!
9. Magical Lighting
Lighting is a fantastic way to create a warm and enchanting glow, instantly adding to the delight of your child’s room.
Fairy lights in a jar or added to a garland is an extra sweet touch.
Another charming option is to incorporate a festive nightlight, casting a glow that’s perfect for bedtime.
Consider adding decor pieces that light up.
In my daughter’s room we add small light up village houses that serve as a soft, comforting illumination that we are able to leave on all night.
Lighting touches not only enhance the festive decor but definitely make the room feel extra magical.
10. Toys
Even toys can be a creative way to add Christmas cheer to your child’s room.
Often times the toys can double as decor themselves.
For example, a small stuffed toy in the shape of an angel or reindeer can easily be placed on a shelf or on top of the bed.
Or perhaps it’s a seasonal puzzle that is proudly displayed instead of tucked away inviting your child to engage in a fun activity.
If these toys only come out once a year, they become cherished items that your child will look forward to each holiday season.
Blending playtime and the festive spirit is a huge win for any parent!
