Why paint a champagne bottle?
Earlier this year I hosted an engagement party for my Goddaughter.
You can read more about it here.
Because it was an engagement celebration it was a no brainer what beverage to serve.
I knew I wanted to have the champagne bottles on the table for guests to help themselves and thought wouldn’t it be great if the bottles matched my tablescape.
I loved the paper napkins I had picked out for my table and thought the design would be so pretty on the bottles for a cohesive look.
I knew l wasn’t skilled enough to hand paint the design onto the bottle myself so I grabbed some acrylic paint and some Mod Podge and magic was made.
Champagne Bottle DIY
Step 1: Use painter’s tape to protect the bottle’s label.
This is definitely the most tedious step, but if you’re a sloppy painter like myself this step is worth it to prevent paint from getting on the label.
Step 2: Use acrylic paint and a foam brush to paint the exposed glass on the bottle.
Paint light coats.
Let it dry and repeat.
Don’t rush it as you want each coat to dry completely.
You’ll likely need 4 coats before it covers completely.
Step 3: Cut out your designs from your paper napkins.
You just need a single layer of the napkin to adhere to the bottle.
Step 4: Use Mod Podge to adhere the cut outs to your bottle.
Using another foam brush, paint Mod Podge onto the bottle where you want to place your cut outs.
Put the cutouts on top of the Mod Podge.
Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the cut out.
It dries clear so no worries about getting a little sloppy.
And don’t be afraid to layer a little of the cut out on top of the bottle’s label.
Step 5: Tie a ribbon onto the bottle.
Once dry, tie a ribbon onto the bottle, chill and place on your table!
Final words on hand painting a champagne bottle…
When I went shopping for the champagne I simply looked for a label that matched my party.
I also picked up non-alcoholic champagne and did the same process for those bottles.
Even if you’re not throwing a party, this painted champagne bottle DIY would make a great gift.
And don’t limit yourself to champagne – any bottle would work!
