Squishy Gift Ideas: How to Make a Fun Squishy Birthday Haul Basket

Looking for squishy gift ideas?

This easy squishy birthday haul basket turns a handful of squishies into a fun surprise gift that’s simply adorable.

If your child has been talking nonstop about squishies lately, you are definitely not alone.

These soft, collectible toys have become one of the biggest trends among kids and tweens—and it’s no surprise they make great birthday gifts.

Honestly, it gives me major Beanie Baby hunting flashbacks—same excitement, just a new generation of collectibles taking over the house.

So when my daughter needed a birthday gift for a friend recently, squishies were the first thing that came to mind.

We decided to turn gift shopping into a little adventure and went on a squishy hunt together, searching local stores for different styles, colors, and surprises.

Doing it together was half the fun.

But instead of just throwing a few squishies into a gift bag, I wanted to turn it into something more meaningful — an experience gift.

That’s how this Squishy Birthday Haul Basket came together.

My goal was to create a mini squishy haul, one surprise at a time—and it completely transformed the gift experience.

Who This Squishy Gift Basket Is Perfect For

This squishy birthday haul basket idea works especially well for:

  • Kids who love squishy toys
  • Tweens and early teens
  • Kids who enjoy collecting or “haul” videos
  • Sensory toy lovers
  • Birthday parties where you want something more creative than a standard gift

It’s simple, affordable, and turns a basic toy into a full experience gift instead of just another gift bag.

Why a Squishy Gift Basket Makes the Perfect Birthday Gift

What makes this idea so fun is that it transforms a simple gift into an experience.

Instead of opening everything at once, each squishy is individually wrapped so the birthday child gets to open them one by one.

It builds anticipation and turns the entire gift into a mini unboxing moment.

Even with just five squishies, the presentation feels thoughtful, exciting, and interactive.

And honestly, it feels like opening a mini squishy haul — one surprise at a time — which is exactly what makes this idea so memorable.

How to Make a Squishy Birthday Haul Basket

Step 1: Go on a Squishy Hunt

Part of what makes this gift so fun is the “hunt.”

My daughter and I made it a little experience of its own as we searched for squishies at different stores.

We checked places like Five Below, Target, local toy stores, and small gift shops.

Suddenly you realize you’re inspecting every aisle of Target like it’s a top-secret mission.

I thought we’d be in and out in 10 minutes… spoiler alert: we were not.

Trying to find different shapes, textures, and sizes made it feel like we were putting together a mini squishy collection.

Step 2: Wrap Each Squishy as a Surprise

Place each squishy inside a small colorful paper gift bag.

Then use a sewing machine to stitch across the top of each bag.

Once sewn, trim off the excess bag above the stitch.

I used zig-zag scissors for a fun finished edge.

This creates a sealed “mystery” package that feels like a blind bag or surprise toy — part of the fun is not knowing exactly what’s inside each one.

No Sewing Machine? Easy Alternatives

If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can still create the same fun surprise effect with a few simple alternatives:

  • Colored bubble mailers for a fun mystery-package feel
  • Paper lunch bags folded and sealed with tape or stickers
  • Small gift boxes sealed with decorative tape

The goal is to create a sealed surprise so each squishy feels like its own little gift. It doesn’t have to be perfect — the excitement of opening each one is what makes this gift special.

Step 3: Assemble the Basket

Place all of the wrapped squishies into a basket or container.

I used a simple plastic basket from Dollar Tree, but any basket, bin, or container will work.

Using an odd number of squishies (like five) helps create a balanced and visually pleasing gift.

I also added some crinkle paper for extra color and to fill in any gaps.

Step 4: Add the Gift Tag

To finish it off, I created free printable gift tags that say:

“Birthday Squishy Haul Incoming!”

There are four color variations included, and they add the perfect finishing touch to the basket.

Cut out the tag you want and punch a hole at the top for the ribbon.

Thread a piece of ribbon through the hole and tie it onto your basket or directly onto one of the wrapped squishies.

This simple finishing touch ties everything together and makes the whole gift feel extra thoughtful and festive.

Where to Buy Squishies for Gift Baskets (Stores + Tips)

One of the most fun parts of creating this gift basket is actually finding the squishies.

Here are a few places we found great options:

  • Five Below
  • Target
  • Local toy stores
  • Small gift shops
  • Mall novelty stores

Insider Squishy Hunting Tips

If you’ve ever gone on a hunt of your own you know squishies aren’t always easy to come by.

At Five Below especially, squishies aren’t always displayed clearly.

Sometimes they’re in endcaps, seasonal bins, or even behind the counter — so it’s worth asking if they have more in stock or new shipments that haven’t been put out yet.

Another helpful tip is to follow your favorite local toy and gift shops on social media.

Many stores post new arrivals on Instagram or Facebook stories, often the same day they receive them.

If you have a locally owned shop nearby, it’s also worth asking if they keep a customer restock list.

Some stores will contact you when new squishy shipments come in.

For us, this “hunt” became part of the fun and a little activity my daughter and I did together while building this gift — and honestly at age 12, I’m grateful to get any time I can with her!

Types of Squishies Kids Are Loving Right Now

If you’re looking for squishy gift ideas for a squishy lover, you’ll notice there are a few popular styles trending:

Slow-rise squishies – The classic squishy kids love! Made from soft foam, these slowly expand back to shape after being squeezed and come in endless designs like food, animals, and cute characters.

Kawaii squishies – Cute Japanese-inspired squishies featuring adorable faces, pastel colors, and charming designs.

Food squishies – One of the most popular categories, featuring fun designs like bread, donuts, desserts, fruit, sushi, and even dumplings.

Animal squishies – A favorite for kids of all ages, with cute designs like cats, dogs, bunnies, frogs, axolotls, and more.

Squishy keychains – Mini squishies attached to clips or keyrings that kids can hang on backpacks, pencil cases, or bags.

Scented squishies – Add a fun sensory element with sweet scents like strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, or cotton candy.

Glitter and confetti squishies – Sparkly designs filled or decorated with glitter, sequins, or colorful confetti.

Water bead and gel squishies – Stretchy sensory squishies filled with gel or tiny beads that move around when squeezed.

Silicone squishies – Durable, stretchy squishies with a soft, jelly-like texture instead of the traditional slow-rise foam feel.

Mochi squishies – Small, soft, stretchy squishies inspired by Japanese mochi treats, often shaped like adorable animals or desserts.

NeeDoh-style squishies – Dough-like sensory squishies that are stretchy, squeezable, and perfect for fidgeting.

Pop-it and fidget squishies – Combine squishy textures with other sensory features like popping bubbles or stretchy materials.

Mystery/blind box squishies – Surprise squishies where kids don’t know which character or design they’ll get until they open the package.

Tip: A mix of different sizes, textures, and styles makes a squishy basket more exciting and gives kids a variety of sensory experiences to enjoy.
