A Fun Alternative to Flowers After a Performance

Flowers are beautiful, but they don’t always feel like the perfect gift for kids.

I wanted to create something that felt just as special as a traditional bouquet but matched what kids are excited about right now.

My daughter loves dance, and after making a DIY sock bouquet for her dance recital, I knew I wanted to create another fun surprise for her next show.

When she had a tap performance, I started looking for something just as memorable to give her after she finished performing.

Since squishy toys are so popular with kids, a NeeDoh seemed like the perfect gift.

I decided to take the same idea behind the sock bouquet and turn it into a colorful squishy bouquet that looked like a traditional flower arrangement — but with a gift kids would actually want to play with.

Why This Makes a Great Performance Gift for Kids

The best part about this gift is that it combines the excitement of receiving flowers with something kids actually enjoy.

This performance gift is:

  • A fun alternative to traditional flowers
  • Perfect for kids and tweens who love squishies
  • Easy to personalize with a cute gift tag
  • Affordable to make
  • A gift kids can enjoy long after the performance ends

And if you don’t want to make the full bouquet, you can make an even simpler version by attaching the printable gift tag directly to the NeeDoh.

When to Give a NeeDoh Performance Gift

Whether you create the full bouquet or simply attach the printable gift tag to a NeeDoh, this performance gift is a fun alternative to flowers for almost any recital, performance, or competition.

It’s perfect for:

  • Dance recital gifts
  • Theater gifts for kids after a school play or musical
  • Choir recital gifts and chorus concerts
  • Piano recital gifts
  • Band and orchestra concerts
  • Gymnastics meet gifts
  • Cheer competition gifts
  • Figure skating performances
  • Talent shows
  • Any special performance where you would normally bring flowers

Whether it’s their first performance or their fiftieth, this simple gift is a fun way to say, “I’m proud of you.”

Unlike fresh flowers, it’s a fun reminder of a special performance that kids can enjoy long after the applause ends.

Two Easy Ways to Give This Performance Gift

There are two easy ways to use this idea:

Make a bouquet: Wrap the NeeDoh to look like a flower bouquet for a fun alternative to traditional flowers.

Keep it simple: Print the free gift tag and tie it directly onto a NeeDoh with ribbon for an easy last-minute gift.

Supplies Needed to Make a NeeDoh Bouquet

Ready to make the bouquet version?

Here’s everything you need.

I love using floral tissue paper for this project because it’s easy to work with, forgiving, and doesn’t tear as easily as traditional tissue paper.

How Much Does This Performance Gift Cost?

One of my favorite things about this gift idea is that it’s very affordable.

You can easily make this performance gift for less than $10.

Approximate costs:

  • NeeDoh squishy: $5–$7
  • Pool noodle: inexpensive and often available at Dollar Tree, Five Below, Target, or Walmart
  • Floral tissue paper: a few dollars and can be used for multiple projects
  • Ribbon: use what you have on hand
  • Chopstick: free if you grab a pair from the grocery store
  • Packing tape: something most people already have at home

How to Make a NeeDoh Performance Bouquet

Step 1: Cut the Pool Noodle

Start by cutting a piece of pool noodle approximately 6 inches long.

The pool noodle will act as the base of your bouquet and gives the NeeDoh something sturdy to sit in.

Step 1 of making a DIY NeeDoh bouquet by cutting a six-inch pool noodle and preparing the wooden chopstick base.

Step 2: Attach the NeeDoh to the Chopstick

Turn your NeeDoh over so you’re looking at the back.

Place the flat end of a wooden chopstick against the back of the NeeDoh.

Using packing tape, secure the chopstick in place.

Then insert the pointed end of the chopstick into the pool noodle.

Step 3: Wrap Your Bouquet

Lay out two sheets of floral tissue paper.

Place the NeeDoh attached to the pool noodle in the center of the tissue paper.

Fold the tissue paper around the NeeDoh just like you would wrap a traditional flower bouquet.

Tie it together with ribbon, then fluff the tissue paper until it looks full and colorful.

Step 4: Add the Free Printable Gift Tag

The final touch is the printable gift tag! (below)

I designed the tag to coordinate with the bright, retro-inspired colors of the NeeDoh packaging.

The colorful 1970s-inspired font makes it feel fun and playful.

Each 8.5 x 11 printable sheet includes four gift tags.

Simply:

  1. Print the gift tag
  2. Cut it out
  3. Punch a hole at the top
  4. Attach it to the bouquet with ribbon

And that’s it!

You now have a fun and memorable performance gift that kids will love.

A Funny Mom Moment

I have to share a funny story about this project.

I was so excited to give this performance gift after my daughter’s tap show.

The bouquet was ready, the tag was attached, and I couldn’t wait to see her reaction.

The gift was a hit — but after taking a closer look, we discovered something funny…

It wasn’t actually a real NeeDoh.

I had been fooled!

I found it at a gift shop and thought I had scored a NeeDoh, but it turned out to be a knockoff.

Finding authentic NeeDoh squishies can sometimes be tricky.

The best part? It didn’t matter.

The gift was still loved, and we had a good laugh about my accidental “fake NeeDoh.”
