Boo Basket Ideas for Kids: 3 Things That Make the Cutest Gift
When it comes to boo basket ideas for kids, it’s easy to get carried away with all the cute Halloween finds.
Candy, little toys, seasonal trinkets … there are so many fun things you could tuck into a basket!
But what if you could create an equally adorable gift with just three thoughtfully chosen items?
I love a good themed gift, especially when the pieces feel like they were made to go together.
And when it comes to kids, I’m always a fan of including a book.
There’s something special about discovering a new favorite story, and it’s a gift parents can appreciate, too.
For a recent visit with family, I put together two Halloween gifts for their little ones.
Each included a Halloween book, a coordinating plush, and one adorable pumpkin lantern.
And I do mean adorable!
I finished them with pretty ribbon and a printable gift tag, and the kids absolutely loved them!
The idea is simple, but the story time theme takes it to another level.
I’m sharing the two boo baskets I made, along with a few more character combinations to inspire your own.
And don’t miss the free printable Halloween gift tags at the end.
They’re the perfect finishing touch!

The 3 Things That Make a Kids’ Boo Basket Special
You don’t need to fill a basket with a dozen different items to make a memorable Halloween boo basket for kids.
The secret is choosing three things that work together to create one adorable little package.
1. Start With a Halloween Book
I love giving books as gifts for kids.
There’s something so fun about introducing a little one to a new story and imagining it becoming one of their favorites.
A good seasonal book is something families can enjoy together year after year.
For this boo basket, look for a Halloween story featuring a character you can pair with a matching plush.
A friendly bat, a silly mummy, a sweet ghost, or a curious black cat are all fun places to start.
For younger children, you certainly don’t want anything too scary.
Older kids might enjoy a funny Halloween story or something a little spookier.

I pair children’s books with coordinating food-themed plushies and get creative with the packaging, too!
Think a strawberry tucked into a berry basket or a pretzel wrapped up in a little bakery bag.
There are 25 fun ideas to inspire your next gift, and trust me, you’ll want to see how many fun combinations I came up with!

2. Add a Coordinating Halloween Plush
Next, find a plush that matches the book.
I just love it when a theme starts to come together!
For my boo baskets, I paired a bat book with a bat stuffed animal (similar) and a mummy book with a mummy plush (similar).
The matching characters made each gift feel personal, even though I followed the same simple idea for both children.
You don’t have to find the exact character from the book, either.
Think a friendly ghost with a ghost story, a black cat with a Halloween adventure, or a pumpkin plush paired with a book about picking the perfect pumpkin.
The possibilities are endless!

3. Finish With an Adorable Pumpkin Lantern
When I found these little pumpkin lanterns, I thought I’d hit the Halloween jackpot.
They’re just so adorable, and they’re the perfect finishing touch for this gift.
Imagine one glowing beside a child’s favorite Halloween story or tagging along for trick-or-treating.
The lanterns are easy to use, too!
Simply expand one to turn on the light, then collapse it when you’re ready to put it away.
A book and a coordinating plush are already a sweet gift, but add this little pumpkin lantern, and you’ve got a true wow moment!
It’s that unexpected third piece that makes the whole gift feel extra special.

7 Boo Basket Ideas for Kids
Once you have the three-item idea down, it’s easy to create different boo baskets based on popular Halloween themes.
I made bat and mummy versions, but there are so many other fun combinations to try!
Here are seven character themes to inspire your own boo basket.
Just be sure to choose a book that’s a good fit for the child’s age.

Want to Add One More Thing?
Honestly, I think a book, a coordinating stuffed animal, and a pumpkin lantern make a pretty perfect little gift all on their own.
But if you want to make your boo basket extra cozy, add a pair of Halloween pajamas!
Imagine giving a child a new Halloween story, a cuddly stuffed animal, a little pumpkin lantern, and festive pajamas for a cozy night of reading.
It’s a sweet way to turn your gift into a whole Halloween evening.
Of course, the pajamas are completely optional.
The three main items make a lovely gift all on their own!
How to Package Your Boo Basket
You don’t actually need a basket to make a boo basket!
For the gifts I made, I used clear cellophane gift bags so the kids could see all the fun items inside and the pumpkin lanterns could glow through the packaging!
Here’s how to put one together:
- Start with the book. Place it at the bottom of a clear cellophane bag to create a sturdy base.
- Add the plush. Position the plush on top of the book so the character is easy to see.
- Tuck in the pumpkin lantern.
- Tie the bag with ribbon. Choose a Halloween color that complements your theme.
- Add a printable gift tag. This little finishing detail makes the gift feel polished and ready to give.
You can use a traditional basket, too.
A small basket or reusable Halloween bucket would work just as well if you prefer that look.
The point is to keep the packaging simple and let the gifts shine—literally!

Free Printable Halloween Boo Basket Gift Tags
A cute gift tag is the finishing touch that pulls everything together.
I created a set of free printable gift tags that are perfect for your story time boo basket.
The designs include:

They’re especially cute with this book-and-stuffed-animal gift idea, but you can certainly use them for other Halloween gifts, too.
Print your favorites, cut them out, and attach one to your gift with ribbon or string.
It’s an easy way to add a personal detail without spending anything extra.

A Sweet and Simple Boo Basket for Kids
You don’t need a basket overflowing with Halloween goodies to make a child’s day.
Sometimes, a few thoughtfully chosen pieces are all it takes.
Choose a Halloween book, pair it with a coordinating plush, and add a little pumpkin lantern.
Finish with ribbon and a printable gift tag, and you’ve created a boo basket that feels personal, playful, and ready to give.
Happy Halloween!
Magic is in the details,
